Genome Sequencing

Genome sequencing is the mapping of the complete DNA of an organism. As a tool in the scientific understanding of human genetic anomalies and diseases it has benefitted from purebred canine genome sequencing.

Purebred canines typically originate from a handful of exemplars, each breed forming one of over 300 distinct closed gene pools. As propagation strives to increase numbers within distinctive breed characteristics, autosomal recessive and complex traits become widespread and apparent, making purebred dogs especially valuable subjects for studying autoimmune disorders, cancers, deafness, blindness, and other genetic traits that are harder to isolate in human populations.

Why genome sequencing for the Cirneco dell’Etna?

A high quality genome sequencing will provide an invaluable tool with which to:

  • Identify genetic anomalies and diseases specific to the breed
  • Improve responsible breeding practices
  • Promote the long-term health and well-being of Cirnechi
  • Preserve the integrity of the Cirneco dell’Etna for future generations

Why the Cirneco Foundation?

Several of the AKC recognized breeds have been the subject of genome sequencing and AKC has contributed to some of these studies. Breeds selected for such studies always share two characteristics: a handful of founder dogs and a tightly closed gene pool.

The Cirneco dell’Etna has neither.

Unlike many breeds, the Cirneco evolved over more than 2,500 years across a broader regional population, drawing from many dogs rather than just a handful. Additionally, working hunting kennels in Sicily and the surrounding region maintain Cirneco bloodlines outside of formal registration. With an open registration system, these lines are available to the registered gene pool for breeding. The Cirneco does not have the numbers nor meet the criteria as a closed gene pool to justify studies.

The Cirneco Foundation has been afforded the opportunity to work with the University of Pennsylvania through the Sylvia M. Van Sloun Lab and, with your help, we are committed to fulfillment of the funding which will make it a reality.
