Welcome to the Cirneco Foundation

The Cirneco Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the well-being and preservation of the Cirneco dell’Etna — an ancient and remarkable breed, often simply “Cirneco” (plural: Cirnechi). Whether you’re an owner, breeder, enthusiast, or simply curious about the breed, you’ve come to the right place.

Our Mission

We promote the humane treatment and overall welfare of Cirnechi and dogs in general through three core areas: Education, Health, and Rescue. Everything we do is guided by our bylaws and driven by a deep commitment to the breed.

How We Operate

The Foundation is governed by a volunteer Board of five Directors serving staggered three-year terms. As a fully volunteer-run organization, no one receives compensation — all funds go directly to our programs. We hold annual meetings each April and convene additionally as needed. We warmly welcome volunteers who share our passion for Cirnechi!

Education & Public Awareness

One of our core missions is to educate the public and the dog-fancy community about the Cirneco dell’Etna. We develop and share breed-specific information and programs for owners, breeders, judges, enthusiasts, and the public, covering:

  • Humane treatment and responsible care of animals, with a special focus on Cirnechi
  • Conformation (appearance) and function (abilities) of the breed
  • Responsible breeding practices and breed standards
  • Health awareness and developmental milestones
  • The breed’s unique history, temperament, and qualities

Health, Veterinary Support, and Research

We are committed to the health and longevity of Cirnechi through advocacy, education, and research:

  • Promoting access to proper veterinary care for Cirnechi and dogs in general
  • Advancing the understanding of diseases, genetic anomalies, injuries, and other health issues affecting the breed
  • Supporting and funding research into Cirneco genetics, breeding practices, and overall health
  • Building a comprehensive, publicly accessible database of health data, scientific studies, and educational materials — available to owners, veterinarians, and researchers alike

Rescue & Adoption

When Cirnechi — or any dog in need — require help, we step in. Our rescue efforts include:

  • Rescuing unwanted, neglected, and/or abused Cirnechi
  • Providing temporary and permanent shelter, medical care, and rehabilitation
  • Facilitating responsible adoption placement into loving homes
